1. Surface hardening
Common surface hardening methods are induction hardening (for small gears) and flame hardening (for large gears).Works well when the case-hardened hardened layer includes the bottom of the dedendum.The hardness of the tooth surface can reach 45-55HRC.
2. Nitriding
Nitriding can ensure high hardness and wear resistance of gears with small deformation, and can not be well finished after heat treatment to improve bearing performance.
3. Carburizing and quenching
Carburized and quenched gears have a large load-bearing capacity, but finishing (grinding) must be used to eliminate heat treatment deformation to ensure accuracy.
The hardness of alloy steel containing 0.2%-0.3% carbon before carburizing is usually in the range of 58-62 HRC.When the hardness is lower than 57HRC, the strength of the hard surface is significantly reduced, and when the hardness is higher than 62HRC, the brittleness increases.The hardness of carburized and quenched gears gradually decreases from the surface to the depth, and the effective carburization depth is defined as the depth from the surface to the hardness of 5.25 HRC.
The effect of carburizing and quenching on the bending fatigue strength of gears not only increases the hardness of the central part, but also lies in the residual compressive stress on the surface.It reduces stress in areas of high compressive stress so that the root of the tooth cannot be ground when grinding.
