1. Early signs of bearing damage
1. Abnormal noise and vibration
Normally operating bearings sound smooth, but the earliest sign of bearing damage is usually a change in noise. It may initially appear as a slight buzzing sound, but as wear and tear progresses, it may develop into a rough, uneven grinding sound, clicking sound, or a low roaring sound. At the same time, abnormal vibration (especially high-frequency vibration) is one of the most reliable indicators of bearing problems, which is especially obvious at startup or high speed.
2. The operating temperature rises abnormally
Damaged bearings can create excessive friction that can cause heat generation. If the temperature of the bearing area rises rapidly in a short period of time, or the temperature difference between each bearing seat is greater than 8°C, it usually indicates internal wear or lubrication failure. Continuous overheating will accelerate the decomposition of the lubricant and form a vicious cycle. When the temperature exceeds 90°C, it has reached the dangerous threshold and must be shut down immediately.
3. Lubricant contamination or leakage
Lubricant condition is a "barometer" of bearing health. If you notice oil leaks, discolored grease, drying out, or a burning smell, there may be an internal bearing failure. In addition, if it is found through oil analysis that the moisture content exceeds the standard or contains metal wear particles larger than 15 μm, it is a strong reminder of bearing abnormalities.
4. Increased energy consumption and decreased performance
Bearing wear causes increased friction, forcing the motor to consume more power. If your equipment is suddenly experiencing an increase in your energy bill, erratic output speed, or difficulty maintaining normal loads, worn bearings may be the culprit.
5. Increased axial or radial clearance
As bearings wear, internal clearance increases. Visible shaft movement, looseness or abnormal coupling vibration under load can cause improper gear meshing and is a serious warning sign that needs to be addressed immediately.
2. Scientific prevention and maintenance strategies
1. Precise installation and alignment
Improper installation is a common cause of premature bearing failure. A laser alignment tool should be used to ensure that the input/output shaft deviation is ≤0.05mm/m, because a very small misalignment (such as 0.1mm) may shorten the bearing life by 60%. At the same time, the anchor bolts should be regrouted and elastic pads should be used to absorb vibration.
2. Implement intelligent status monitoring
Move away from purely time-based maintenance and move towards predictive maintenance. Use an infrared thermal imager to regularly scan the temperature distribution, use a vibration analysis tool to capture the sideband characteristics of 1.6-3.2 times the frequency, or use an ultrasonic detector to "listen" to the high-frequency noise of the bearing to conduct precise intervention months before a failure occurs.
